THE MAYA AND EUCLIDES IN MATHEMATICS

We met today with the teacher Edwin Vasquez who will tell us
about the Maya culture in the history of mathematics… teacher Edwin tell us..
good morning ..... to talk about the Mayas and mathematics is to talk about one of the
greatest cultures of America regarding that theme, because to talk about the Mayas is to talk about different
types of calendar ... and a very special calendar they had is one of 18 months
which is much more accurate than the calendar we handle now ... they worked
18 months of 20 days and then they organized the calendar much better than the one we

Have nowadays ... besides this to talk about the Mayas is talk of a very powerful
numbering system that do not work on base 10 but on base 5 and apart from that the Mayas
considered the zero that not all cultures worldwide had it in mind.. for
example the Romans, there is no zero in Roman, neither in Greek, nor in Egyptian.
While the Mayas did incorporated zero in their numbering system and that was a great
... improvement over other cultures ... including zero in the Mayan culture is what gave the birth

o our decimal system because thanks to zero any quantity of numbers could be represented

.. or very big numbers, in a shorter way the first numbering systems
used some symbols and repeated them of a number. For example, the 1000 had to do
about 20 or 30 symbols while using the zero is represented with 4 zero zero zero
one and that you can represent very large numbers with small numbers

Teacher tell us, through history which has been the most representative character of
math ... to talk of mathematicians in history would take too long for example to talk about
Gauss, Riemann Poincare but for me the most important mathematician in history it was Euler .

Why was Euler able to work different fields of mathematics and make significant

nd lasting contributions that until now apply ... for example the number of Euler was the one
which represented the exponential function and with it he linked the complex numbers
and trigonometric functions ... the most famous equation in history is the Euler equation
in the year 1980 was ranked as the most beautiful equation in the history of
mathematics then Euler is one of the most representative for my taste. Although there will be
someone who likes another one but for my taste Euler is one of the greatest… can you
tell us about Euclides ... .Euclides to talk about Eucliesis to talk about the beginnings of the
genesis of geometry ... Euclid in his book s’ elements capture the whole basis of plane
geometry and it is a geometry that has been validityuntil today more than 2000 years
and has had very tiny changes and something very important about Euclides was that
he did all geometry inferential ... all of them are deductive processes ranging from the basics
...... that is the definition of a point to elaborate constructions ...we appreciate
his intervention participation and the valuable contribution he has made to us today
I appreciate the invitation and this is an invitation to all people that see this video
that mathematics is something exciting if you set to scan or frisk in the origins and see
that mathematics are not just numbers but solutions to problems of all kinds in all the sciences
..., physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology which is something new that is coming and that

without mathematics teacher would not be possible ... thank you very much. You are so kind
